Ran across this tip, thought I'd share.

A few extra things you can do to make your hard work last a little longer:

Right after carving, coat the edges with petroleum jelly. You might also smear it on the inside of the shell, as well. Then keep it in the shade and out of the sunlight, which can dry it out.
